Table of contents

The ideal Amazon image size is a square image of about 2000 x 2000 px, and never smaller than 1000 px on the longest side, because that is the threshold that turns on zoom. The main image must sit on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), with the product filling roughly 85% of the frame and no text, logos, badges or props.

That is the short answer. The rest of this page covers every image slot on an Amazon listing in one place: main image, gallery images, A+ Content modules, video, file formats, colour mode, bulk-upload file naming and the rejection reasons that trip sellers up most. Where a rule depends on your category or marketplace, we say so, because Amazon's style guides do differ. When in doubt, confirm in Seller Central's image guidelines and your category style guide before you shoot.

If you only want to know whether your existing photos pass, run them through the free Amazon Image Checker first. It flags size, background and format problems before Amazon does.

Main image requirements (slot 1)

The main image is the photo shoppers see in search results, so it is held to the strictest rules. Amazon's main image requirements, as applied across most categories, are:

  • Pure white background. It must be RGB 255, 255, 255. A light grey (say 245, 245, 245) looks white on your screen but can fail automated checks and get the listing suppressed.
  • Product fills about 85% of the frame. Tiny products floating in a sea of white look weak in search and can be flagged. Crop tight, leaving a slim margin.
  • Real photograph of the product. Not a drawing or illustration, and not a render that misrepresents the item. The product shown must match what the customer receives.
  • No text, logos, badges or graphics. No "Best Seller", no "Free Shipping", no watermarks, no borders, no colour blocks. Logos printed on the product itself are fine.
  • No props or extras. Only what is included in the box. If the accessory is not sold with the item, it does not belong in the main image.
  • Whole product in frame. Do not crop off parts of the product.

Some categories add their own twists. Apparel commonly has rules about how garments are shown (on a model or flat), and certain categories allow or forbid packaging in the main image. Check your category style guide.

Amazon listing image size and dimensions

Image size is the question sellers ask most, and the numbers are simple:

  • Minimum: 1000 px on the longest side. Below this, zoom does not work, and very small images may not be accepted at all. Amazon has historically cited 500 px as an absolute floor in some guidance, but you should never upload anything that small.
  • Recommended: 1600 to 2000+ px on the longest side. This gives a crisp zoom on desktop and holds up on high-density phone screens.
  • Maximum: commonly 10,000 px on the longest side.
  • Aspect ratio: square (1:1) is safest. Amazon displays gallery images in a square frame, so a 2000 x 2000 px image uses the full space. Tall or wide images get letterboxed with white space.

If your source photos are below 1000 px, do not just stretch them in an editor, which produces blur that reviewers and shoppers notice. Use the free Product Image Upscaler to rebuild detail, then resize to 2000 x 2000 px.

How many images can an Amazon listing have?

Most categories allow up to 9 images including the main image, and the product page typically shows around 7 in the gallery thumbnails, with the rest reachable by scrolling or clicking through. A listing video, when added, usually occupies one of the visible thumbnail positions.

These counts vary by category, marketplace (amazon.com vs amazon.in vs others) and even device, and Amazon adjusts the layout from time to time. The number of slots Seller Central shows you when you edit the listing is the real limit for your product.

What matters more than the maximum is using every slot well. A strong listing usually covers: main image, a key benefit infographic, lifestyle in use, size and dimensions, features close-up, what is in the box, and a comparison or trust image. Our guides to gallery image strategy and the order to place your images in walk through each slot.

Secondary images are where you sell. They are far more flexible than the main image:

  • Backgrounds: any background is allowed, including lifestyle scenes.
  • Text and graphics: infographics, callouts, icons and comparison charts are allowed. Keep text large enough to read on a phone, because most Amazon traffic is mobile.
  • Props and people: allowed, as long as it is clear what is included in the purchase.
  • Size: same as the main image, at least 1000 px on the longest side, ideally 2000 x 2000 px.

What is still not allowed on any image: misleading claims, unverified badges (such as "Amazon's Choice" or "Best Seller" added by you), competitor brand names, pricing or promotional language, contact details or off-Amazon links, and offensive content. Category-specific claims (health, safety, certifications) need to be supportable.

Accepted file formats

Amazon commonly accepts these image formats for listing images:

Format Notes
JPEG (.jpg / .jpeg) Preferred. Best balance of quality and file size for photos
TIFF (.tif) Accepted; large files, useful if your studio delivers TIFF
PNG (.png) Accepted; good for infographics with flat colour and crisp text
GIF (.gif) Non-animated only; rarely the right choice

Animated GIFs, WebP and HEIC (the default iPhone format) are not reliable choices; convert them to JPEG before uploading. Accepted formats can change, so check the current list in Seller Central's image guidelines if you are using anything other than JPEG.

Colour mode: sRGB, not CMYK

Use sRGB or RGB colour mode. CMYK is a print colour mode, and CMYK files are commonly rejected or display with dull, shifted colours on screen. If your images came from a print designer or a packaging file, check the colour mode and convert to sRGB before export.

File naming for bulk image upload

When you upload images one at a time through the listing editor, file names do not matter. When you use Seller Central's bulk image upload, they do, because the file name tells Amazon which product and which slot each image belongs to.

The commonly used pattern is:

  • Identifier: the ASIN (or, depending on the upload method, your SKU or another product identifier such as EAN or UPC).
  • Variant code: .MAIN for the main image, then .PT01, .PT02 and so on up to .PT08 for additional images. A swatch image commonly uses .SWCH.
  • Extension: .jpg (or another accepted format).

So a main image might be named B0EXAMPLE1.MAIN.jpg, and the second gallery image B0EXAMPLE1.PT01.jpg. Do not add spaces, extra dots or other characters.

The exact naming convention and the identifier Amazon expects can differ by marketplace and upload method, so confirm it in Seller Central's image upload help page before you send a large batch. Getting it wrong usually means images land on the wrong slot or fail silently.

If you are preparing dozens or hundreds of images, the free Bulk Amazon Image Processor resizes, whitens backgrounds and renames files to the ASIN/SKU pattern in one pass. For listing data rather than images, see our Seller Central CSV upload guide.

A+ Content image sizes (summary)

A+ Content (formerly Enhanced Brand Content) lives further down the product page and uses its own module-specific image sizes. The most common ones:

Module Image size
Standard Image Header with Text 970 x 600 px
Standard Image & Text Overlay (dark or light) 970 x 300 px
Standard Company Logo 600 x 180 px
Standard Three Images & Text 300 x 300 px each
Standard Four Images & Text 220 x 220 px each
Standard Single Image modules 300 x 300 px
Standard Comparison Chart 150 x 300 px per product
Premium Full Image 1464 x 600 px desktop, 600 x 450 px mobile
Premium Carousel and Hotspots 1464 x 600 px
Brand Story background 1464 x 625 px
Brand Story image card 362 x 453 px

General A+ file rules: JPG or PNG, RGB/sRGB colour mode, and file size commonly limited to about 2 MB per image for Basic A+, with Premium A+ allowing larger files (often cited around 5 MB). Amazon updates modules over time, and the upload window in A+ Content Manager always shows the current required size, so treat that as the source of truth.

For every module, with notes on safe areas and mobile cropping, read our full A+ Content image sizes and specifications guide. To resize an image to the exact module size in your browser, use the free A+ Content Image Sizes tool.

Amazon product video basics

Video is now a standard part of a strong listing. The basics most sellers need:

  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 px (16:9) is the safe default; 1280 x 720 px is commonly the minimum.
  • Format: MP4 or MOV are the common choices.
  • Content: show the actual product being sold. No pricing, promotions, off-Amazon links, contact details or competitor references.
  • Length: there is no single magic length, but short, focused videos (well under a minute for most products) tend to hold attention.

Where the video appears, who can upload it and how long Amazon's review takes varies by account type and marketplace. For the full spec sheet, see Amazon product video specs for 2026, and for why the first seconds matter so much, read our post on the main image, video slot and the 1.6-second rule.

Common rejection reasons and how to fix them

Most image problems fall into a handful of repeat offenders:

Problem Why it fails Fix
Off-white or grey main background Not RGB 255,255,255 Replace background with pure white using the Image Fixer
Text, badge or logo on main image Main image must be product only Move the message to a gallery image or A+
Product too small in frame Should fill about 85% Crop tighter and re-centre
Image under 1000 px No zoom; may be rejected Upscale with the Product Image Upscaler, then resize
Props or accessories not included Misrepresents what ships Remove them from the main image
CMYK colour mode Shifted or rejected Convert to sRGB on export
Wrong file name in bulk upload Image lands on wrong slot or fails Rename to ASIN/SKU + .MAIN / .PTxx + .jpg
Watermark or border Not allowed on main image Export a clean version
Blurry or pixelated image Fails quality review and hurts trust Reshoot or upscale from the best original
Unsupported claims on any image Policy violation Remove or back the claim with proof

A good habit: run every image through the Amazon Image Checker before upload. It catches size, background, and format issues in seconds and saves a round trip with Seller Central.

A simple pre-upload checklist

  • Main image on pure white (RGB 255,255,255), product filling about 85% of the frame, no text or props.
  • Every image at least 1000 px on the longest side, ideally 2000 x 2000 px square.
  • JPEG format, sRGB colour mode, no watermarks.
  • Gallery images cover benefits, use, size, details and what is in the box.
  • Bulk files named ASIN or SKU + .MAIN / .PT01 to .PT08 + .jpg (confirmed in Seller Central).
  • A+ images exported at each module's exact size, under the file size limit.
  • Video at 1920 x 1080 px, showing the real product, with no prices or external links.
  • Category style guide checked for any extra rules.

Creating the images themselves

Knowing the specs is half the job. The other half is producing a full set of compliant images: a white-background main shot, six or seven persuasive gallery images, A+ modules at the right sizes and a listing video. The free tools above handle checking, fixing, resizing, upscaling and bulk renaming. If you would rather generate the whole set from a single product link or a few photos, the paid zonfy A+ content generator creates A+ modules, gallery images at Amazon sizes, listing copy and a product video in one workflow.

Whichever route you take, the rules on this page stay the same: pure white main image, 1000 px minimum, 2000 px ideal, JPEG in sRGB, and every category-specific detail confirmed in Seller Central before you upload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Amazon listings?

Upload square images of about 2000 x 2000 px. Amazon needs the longest side to be at least 1000 px for zoom, and 1600 to 2000+ px gives a sharper zoom without making files unnecessarily heavy.

Does the Amazon main image have to be on a white background?

Yes. The main image must sit on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), show only the product being sold, and have no text, logos, badges or props. Secondary gallery images can use lifestyle scenes and text.

How many images can I upload to an Amazon listing?

Most categories allow up to 9 images including the main image, with around 7 typically visible on the product page, but the exact limit varies by category and marketplace. Check the image slots shown in Seller Central for your product.

What file format should Amazon product images be?

JPEG is the preferred format. Amazon also commonly accepts TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF, and images should be in sRGB or RGB colour mode rather than CMYK.

Why does Amazon reject or suppress my main image?

The most common causes are an off-white or grey background, text or graphics on the main image, the product filling too little of the frame, extra props or accessories not included, and images below 1000 px on the longest side. Fixing the background to pure white and resizing usually resolves it.

What size are Amazon A+ Content images?

A+ images use module-specific sizes, for example 970 x 600 px for the Basic header image and 1464 x 600 px for most Premium full-width modules. Each module shows its required size in A+ Content Manager when you upload.
